Usana The Queens Horses Pinot Grisio
This Pinot Gris from Usana, hails from the Winshaw Vineyards in Stellenbosch and was made in 2018 under the name The Queens Horses. The aging of the wine gives it beautiful depth and a rounded mouth feel. It has lovely white fruit like golden delicious apple and pear on the palate and rounded off with a touch of honey.
It has good depth and Pinot Gris is very versatile with food. Made to pair with foods that are slightly richer on the palate like pork, seared salmon and duck.
This wine should age well - it drinks well now but should age well over the next 5 years in the bottles.
All the grapes came from a block on our farm, Klein Welmoed in Stellenbosch. All the vineyards are trellised. All grapes are harvested by hand in individual bins in optimal conditions to ensure true quality from beginning to end. In the cellar, the grapes were whole bunch pressed. The resulting juices was then naturally fermented in predominantly (70%) older French oak barrels with the remainder aging in a fermentation egg. It spent around 7 months on the lees. The wine was later blended before bottling.

Origin of the Name:
"Our great grandfather, Dr. William Charles Winshaw was born in the USA. He ran away from home when he was 12 years old. During his travels he met Lieutenant McGuiness who was purchasing mules and horses for Queen Victoria’s horses based in South Africa. He couldn’t resist seeing another continent and later travelled with and cared for the mules on their trip to South Africa."
